Grizzlies Arrive at the Louisville Zoo
The Louisville Zoo has once again assisted in animal rescue efforts when it brought a mother grizzly bear and her two cubs (one male and one female) to Louisville from Polson, Montana earlier this month. The bears are currently completing a period of quarantine in an off-exhibit area and will eventually take up residence in the new Glacier Run Bear Habitat which is scheduled to open this coming spring.

Louisville Zoo celebrates the birth of another giraffe
A new baby Masai giraffe was born on Wednesday, July 21, at the Louisville Zoo. At 11 p.m., 13-year-old Malaika gave birth to her fourth offspring—a 180-pound, 6 ½ foot male. The baby dropped 6-feet to the ground from his mother, who gave birth standing up. He stood for the first time within an hour of birth. Walker, age 17, is the father.

 

Meet Diego from Nickelodeon’s Go, Diego, Go! at the Louisville Zoo’s Latin Festival August 7-8
Zoo visitors can meet Diego from noon to 4 p.m. in the ZooVision building, so be sure to bring your camera! Guests can also enjoy the richness of Latin culture with music and dance performances at various times during the weekend. DJs from radio stations La Caliente 105.7 FM and La Explosiva 940 will also be on hand to offer music and games.

 

Louisville Zoo opens new Seal and Sea Lion Habitat at Glacier Run
“The Louisville Zoo is known for its award-winning, innovative exhibits and Glacier Run continues that tradition with a world-class zoo experience right here in our own back yard,” Abramson said. “Glacier Run is an investment that will provide a major boost to our community and region’s quality of life and will be a tourism attraction for years to come.”

 

Louisville Zoo docent sets
new volunteer record—10,000 hours

Docent Janie Glass is the first ever Louisville Zoo docent to volunteer a total of 10,000 hours. Glass has been a docent, a volunteer teacher who works with the Louisville Zoo Education Department, since 1989.

 

Seal and Sea Lion habitat public Grand Opening June 30
This is the grand opening of the Seal and Sea Lion habitat at Glacier Run that features a state-of-the-art outdoor pool that holds 108,000 gallons of salt water chilled to 66 degrees year round.
 

Louisville Zoo offers $5 Dino-mite movie night July 10

Bring your blankets or lawn chairs and enjoy a fun family movie under the stars at the Louisville Zoo’s Oasis Field on Saturday, July 10. Special $5 Zoo admission after 5 p.m. includes pre-movie activities, Zoo exhibits open until dusk and a dino-themed movie at sundown. Members enter free as a benefit of their membership.

Families can spend more time at the Louisville Zoo this summer during special Family Twilight Hours. The Zoo will be open on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays in June and July until 7 p.m. (exit Zoo by 8 p.m.).

Louisville Zoo’s female infant gorilla is doing exceptionally well. It is now time to take the next step in her future and so she will soon be leaving for a new home. But before she leaves, the Louisville Zoo’s staff, which has been caring for her around the clock, named her Misha (MEE-sha)—a combination and blending of her parents’ names, Mia Moja and Mshindi.

The Louisville Zoo’s male baby giraffe now has a name—Crosby. The name was submitted by 13-year-old Josie Willis of Louisville as part of the Zoo’s Baby Giraffe naming contest presented by Floyd Memorial Women’s Services.

The Zoo’s female infant baby gorilla is continuing to improve, and the Zoo’s veterinary team says her prognosis is good.

The 17th annual Throo the Zoo 5K Run/Walk, presented by Norton Audubon Hospital, will be held on Saturday, May 8, 2010. Proceeds benefit the Louisville Zoo, which is dedicated to its mission of bettering the bond between people and our planet.

Baby now being hand raised

Late Wednesday afternoon, Gorilla Forest staff noticed that the infant gorilla was having trouble holding her head up, less able to cling onto mom and showing signs of weakness. So she was taken to the Zoo’s animal hospital.

Louisville Zoo teen Project Polar Bear finalists head to San Diego
Louisville Zoo volunteers Emily Goldstein, an 18-year-old University of Louisville freshman; Sam Leist, a 18-year-old Senior at Saint Xavier High School; and Kaitlin O’Bryan, a 15-year-old sophomore at Atherton High School, have made it to the final round in the international Project Polar Bear contest sponsored by Polar Bears International.

Baby gorilla injured - Update April 9
The Louisville Zoo staff is encouraged by the progress the infant gorilla is making. She is stable, bright and alert and continuing to nurse and receive good nutrition from mom. She is also strong and nimble when clinging to mom without assistance.

Now after guests visit the Zoo’s new Dinosaurs Alive! exhibit featuring 16 animatronic robotic dinosaurs, they can continue the experience by venturing to Dino Island at the Zoo’s 4-D ride theater.

Baby gorilla injured - Update April 5
The infant gorilla is continuing to show positive signs such as nursing, sleeping through the night and on occasion clinging to mom without assistance. She seems bright and alert.

Louisville Zoo’s female gorilla baby suffered an injury today following a physical encounter with the father, 22-year-old silverback Mshindi, which resulted in the loss of part of her left leg. The Zoo’s veterinary staff is working intently to stabilize the infant.

Dinosaurs! opens; kids to view exhibit
March 22 is the grand opening of Dinosaurs Alive!, a temporary exhibit through September 30 that will feature 16 mammoth, super life-like animatronic dinosaurs. Seventh-grade Newburg Middle School students who are currently participating in the School at the Zoo program will be the first children to experience the magic of incredible, futuristic technology and the colossal robotic creatures that roar, snarl and move.
