We are so excited about our planet and doing things to help the environment that we’re celebrating Earth Day – all month long! Click here to see a calendar of fun things you can do at home and at the Zoo to get in touch with the earth during the month of April.

Each weekday visitors can enjoy the many keeper presentations and animal encounters that we offer and every weekend will be filled with scavenger hunts and special activities like:

Saturday, April 3

Special Activities

Visit with folks from the Louisville Nature Center to learn about all their camps, classes and programs. They will also be offering their popular rain barrels for sale for $60 – that’s a $10 dollar discount on the regular price.  (1 – 4 p.m.)

Sunday, April 4

Eggstravaganza

11 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Visit the Zoo to celebrate Easter with some of our EGGstraordinary egg-laying animals.  Be sure to pick up your egg scavenger hunt as you enter the Zoo. The Easter Bunny will be here to meet and greet visitors in Zoo Vision (12-4 p.m.) Be sure to bring your cameras to take some great family photos.

Saturday, April 10

Special Activities

The Louisville Science Center will host climate change activities on the environmental implications for the Ohio River Valley. These activities will explore the growing evidence of global warming in our watershed. (11 a.m. – 4 p.m.)

ZooPoopyDoo Compost and Mulch Sale (8 a.m. – 12 p.m. in the bus parking lot)

Sunday, April 11

Bat Awareness Day:
Featuring the Louisville Zoo’s fruit and vampire bats and Stellaluna

11 a.m. – 4 p.m

Come learn more about the fascinating world of bats! Keeper talks and animal enrichment activities will help dispel myths and misconceptions surrounding these amazing creatures. Guests will also have the chance to meet and greet Stellaluna (12 – 4 p.m.)

Saturday, April 17

Special Activities

Bluegrass Ecycle will be on hand accepting electronic waste products for recycling. (11 a.m. – 4 p.m. in the bus parking lot.) Onsite hard-drive destruction will be available.

Sunday, April 18

Primate Awareness Day: 
Featuring the Louisville Zoo’s amazing primates AND Curious George

11 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Come on out and ask our animal experts everything you’ve always wanted to know about gorillas, orangutans, simangs, woolly monkeys and more. Enjoy a day full of zookeeper presentations and animal enrichment activities. Guests will also have a chance to meet and greet Curious George (12 - 4 p.m.)
 

Saturday, April 24

Special Activities

DDC of Kentucky paper shredding will be at the Zoo shredding papers, folders, ID & credit cards. (11 a.m. – 4 p.m. in the bus parking lot.) Please remove papers from binders and remove all carbon paper before bringing them to the Zoo. All of the shredded paper will be recycled to help reduce the amount of raw materials needed to make new products as well as keeping shredding out of landfills.

Mulch Sale (8 a.m. – 12 p.m. in the bus parking lot). 
Zoo Poopy Doo compost is completely sold out.  Mulch is still available.

 

Sunday, April 25

Earth Day Festival

Eco-partner displays 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.

Special discount admission is just $2 per person all day, courtesy of E.ON U.S.

It’s a Party for the Planet to celebrate Earth Day!  You can learn about the Zoo’s conservation efforts and visit environmental displays by some of our eco- partners at four stations set up throughout the Zoo.

The first 1,000 guests to bring in an old cellphone to donate to the Zoo’s cell phone recycling program will receive a FREE “I Helped Save Gorillas” cloth tote bag from E.ON U.S. and Eco-Cell, the Zoo’s partner in cell phone recycling.

Then be sure to pick up your free copy of the Toyota Backyard Action Hero Magazine. Come join the fun and learn what you can do to help save our planet!
