SCOTTY (Born: March 18, 2007)
Baby elephant Scotty is growing up fast. He was the first elephant
ever born in Louisville Zoo’s history and the first born in the
State of Kentucky. He was born to mom Mikki on Sunday, March 18 at
8:45 p.m. and weighed 285 pounds!
Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ (AZA) elephant
breeding program is administered under the auspices of the Elephant Species
Survival Plan (SSP), a cooperative program of all accredited zoos with
elephants. The plan promotes the survival of elephant species into the
future, by providing linkages between zoo animal “ambassadors” and the
conservation of their wild counterparts in nature.

September 10:
A painting by
22-year-old African elephant Mikki (baby elephant Scotty’s mom) will
be one of the numerous pieces up for sale during The Arts by Animal
auction, which will be broadcast online in high-definition on
Tuesday, September 16 via the Auction Network. Funds raised from
Mikki’s painting will help benefit the Louisville Zoo!
July 17: Scotty went swimming the
Elephant Yard Pool for the first time today. He seemed
to thoroughly enjoy the experience which included splashing around
with his mom, Mikki. See the video at the right.
March 15: Scotty celebrates his first
birthday at the Zoo with his very own birthday cake.
May 8, 2008: Scotty now weighs about 1,100
pounds and can’t get enough sweet potatoes, his current favorite
food. Besides his mom’s milk, Scotty eats a good supply of veggies
and grain twice a day. And Scotty’s keepers can feel his tusks
starting to grow. He is currently being trained to lie down and sit
up, and he evens hold still to have his feet examined and trimmed.
His current favorite activity, though, is chasing ducks.
Exhibit Schedule
You can see baby elephant Scotty daily from 10 a.m.
to 4 p.m. He even does elephant aerobics with mom Mikki and aunt
Punch at 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. daily.

When African elephant Mikki (Scotty’s mom) arrived at the Zoo more than 20 years ago, Elephant Area Supervisor Dave Campbell was there. “This is not a normal 9 to 5 job,” Elephant Area Supervisor Dave Campbell said.
